Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Ruth was a small teenager when her father who was employed as the carnival barker, passed away. The mother of the family had to work in jobs such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth grew up in a tenement community that was poor of Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended school. She left the institution she was in after only two years to pursue the profession of acting. This path was fraught with challenges. After obtaining a position at New York as a model for a detective magazine, she was unable to secure jobs for stage. When she was employed as a hat-check girl at a nightclub she resigned and went back to Boston. The city of Boston was when she worked at evening as an actor for the New England Repertory Company and during the day she was an usherette. She earned a bachelor's degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
